Bill Splitter

Even splits or itemized — tip and tax shared fairly, down to the last penny.

How to split a bill

  1. Enter the subtotal, tip %, and tax.
  2. Even split: set the number of people — shares appear instantly.
  3. Itemized: list each person's items as dollar amounts separated by commas, e.g. 24.50, 6.00.
  4. Check the total line — the shares always add up to the exact bill.

Frequently asked questions

How do you split a bill evenly without losing pennies?

Divide the total cents by the number of people, round everyone down to the cent, then give one extra cent to the first people until the remainder is gone. Splitting $10.00 three ways gives $3.34, $3.33, $3.33 — adding up to exactly $10.00.

How does the itemized split share tip and tax?

Each person pays their own items in full, and the tip plus tax are divided in proportion to what each person ordered. If you ordered $20 of a $30 subtotal, you cover two-thirds of the tip and tax.

Is the tip calculated before or after tax?

This tool calculates the tip as a percentage of the subtotal (before tax), which is the standard restaurant practice. The tax you enter is added on top of subtotal + tip.

Can the shares ever add up to more or less than the bill?

No. Every calculation happens in integer cents, and any leftover pennies from rounding are distributed one by one, so the per-person shares always sum to the exact bill total.

What if someone ordered nothing?

In itemized mode, a person with $0 of items pays only their share of tip and tax — split evenly among everyone when nobody ordered anything, or nothing extra when they truly ordered nothing.
