Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate sales commission?

Multiply the sale amount by the commission rate as a decimal. A $1,200 sale at 5% pays $1,200 × 0.05 = $60 per sale.

What is a good commission rate?

It varies by industry — roughly 5–10% is common in retail and auto sales, 15–30% in insurance and real estate (often split with a brokerage), and 2–5% in high-ticket B2B. There is no universal “good” number; compare against your own industry.

Is commission taxed like regular income?

In the US, commission is supplemental wages: employers typically withhold a flat 22% federal rate (on amounts up to $1M), but your actual tax depends on your total income at filing time.

How do I figure out my total commission for the month?

Compute the commission on each sale and add them up — or, if every sale uses the same rate, multiply one sale’s commission by your number of sales. This calculator does the second version automatically.

Can commission be more than my base pay?

Yes — many sales roles are commission-heavy or even 100% commission. The calculator shows both per-sale and total commission so you can project earnings at different sales counts.
