Complex Number Calculator
a+bi arithmetic with worked steps — FOIL, rationalization, polar form, and more.
Type numbers like 3+4i, 2i, −5, i, or 3+i — spaces are fine.
Display rounds to 6 decimal places with trailing zeros trimmed. Powers use repeated multiplication.
How to calculate with complex numbers
- Type z₁. Forms like 3+4i, 2i, −5, i, −i, and 3+i all work; spaces are ignored.
- For two-number operations, type z₂ (add, subtract, multiply, divide).
- Pick an operation. Multiply shows every FOIL step; divide shows the rationalization steps.
- For polar → rectangular, type z₁ as r∠θ — for example 5∠30.
- For integer power, enter the exponent n (a whole number, 0–1000).
- Press Calculate. The result appears rounded to 6 decimals, trailing zeros trimmed.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type a complex number?
Use the form a+bi, and be flexible: 3+4i, 3-4i, 2i, -5, i, -i, and 3+i all parse correctly, spaces are ignored, and decimals like 3.5+2.5i work too.
What does the multiply option show me?
Every FOIL step: the four products (a)(c), (a)(di), (bi)(c), (bi)(di), the substitution i² = -1, and the final combined a+bi — so you can follow the algebra, not just the answer.
How does complex division work here?
By rationalization: multiply top and bottom by the conjugate of the divisor, so the denominator becomes c² + d², a real number. The steps show the numerator expansion and the final a+bi result.
What are modulus and argument?
The modulus |a+bi| = √(a²+b²) is the number's distance from the origin. The argument is its angle in the complex plane in degrees, found with atan2(b, a).
How do I convert between rectangular and polar form?
Choose polar form to see a+bi written as r∠θ° with r = |z| and θ = arg(z). For the reverse, pick polar to rectangular and type z₁ as r∠θ, for example 5∠30.
