Discount / Percent-Off Calculator

A sale sign is a math problem in disguise. Solve it before you pay.

How to calculate a discount price

  1. Enter the original price before any markdown.
  2. Set the discount % — drag the slider or type the number.
  3. Add a stacked discount if there's a coupon on top of the sale (leave it 0 otherwise).
  4. Press Calculate. See the sale price, your dollar savings, and the true total savings %.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a percentage discount?

Multiply the price by the discount as a decimal and subtract it: $80 at 25% off = $80 − ($80 × 0.25) = $60.

How do stacked discounts work?

They apply one after another, not added together: 20% then 10% on $100 = $72, not $70, because the second discount comes off the already-reduced price.

How do I find the original price from the sale price and discount?

Divide the sale price by (1 − the discount as a decimal): a $60 item at 25% off was originally $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.

What does “up to 50% off” actually mean?

It is the maximum discount in the sale; most items in the store are marked down by less. Check each tag rather than trusting the banner.

Is sales tax charged before or after the discount?

Usually after — most US states charge sales tax on the price you actually pay, i.e. the discounted price.

Is this financial advice?
