How to estimate your electricity bill

  1. Add your appliances: pick a preset (its typical wattage fills in automatically) or choose "Custom appliance" and enter the wattage from the device's label. Set hours it runs per day.
  2. Adjust anything — wattage and hours on each row stay editable, and rows can be removed. Three common appliances are loaded to start.
  3. Enter your rate per kWh (from your utility bill) and the number of billing days.
  4. Watch the totals update live: total kWh, your estimated bill, and a per-appliance cost breakdown showing exactly where the money goes.

Frequently asked questions

How is my electricity bill calculated?

Each appliance uses watts ÷ 1000 × hours of use = kWh, and your utility multiplies total kWh by your rate per kWh. This estimator walks through that math appliance by appliance.

What is a kilowatt-hour (kWh)?

The energy of 1,000 watts running for one hour — a 100-watt bulb left on for 10 hours uses exactly 1 kWh.

What uses the most electricity in a home?

Heating and cooling dominate — space heaters, dryers, and air conditioners draw 1,000+ watts. Refrigerators use less per hour but run 24/7.

How can I lower my electricity bill?

Target the biggest kWh consumers first: shorter dryer and space-heater run times, and a warmer AC setpoint, beat unplugging phone chargers by a wide margin.

Are these wattage figures exact?

No — they're typical values to start from. Every preset's wattage is editable, and you can add custom appliances with your device's real rating.

Is this financial advice?
