Fuel Cost & Road Trip Calculator

Know the gas bill before you leave the driveway.

How to estimate your road trip fuel cost

  1. Choose your units: MPG if you think in miles and gallons, L/100km if you think in kilometers and liters. The distance and price labels update to match.
  2. Enter the one-way distance, your car's fuel efficiency, and the fuel price per gallon or liter.
  3. Tick round trip if you're coming back, and set how many people are splitting the cost.
  4. Press Calculate. Fuel needed, total cost, and each person's share appear instantly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate fuel cost for a road trip?

Divide the trip distance by your MPG to get gallons (or multiply km by L/100km ÷ 100 to get liters), then multiply by the price per gallon or liter. This calculator does all of it, including round trips and splitting.

How do I convert MPG to L/100km?

L/100km = 235.214 ÷ MPG. So 25 MPG is about 9.4 L/100km. Note the flip: higher MPG is better, but lower L/100km is better.

What is a good fuel efficiency number?

Most gasoline sedans get 28–38 MPG (6–8 L/100km); SUVs land around 22–30 MPG. Check your owner's manual or the EPA sticker for your car.

How do I split road trip fuel costs fairly?

The usual fair split is total fuel cost divided by riders. Enter the number of people and this calculator shows each person's share.
