How to calculate your grade

A weighted grade is the number most classes actually use. Each category (homework, quizzes, exams) counts for a slice of the final grade, and your score in each category is averaged first, then weighted:

1. Add your categories in the tracker — name, weight %, and optionally how many lowest scores to drop.
2. Enter each assignment with the points you earned and the points possible. Averages update live.
3. Read your grade in the sidebar. Categories with no scores yet are left out of the math, so an ungraded final doesn't drag you down.

What do I need on my final?

The formula behind the final-exam tab:

Needed = (desired − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight

Example: you're at 84%, you want a 90%, and the final is worth 20%. Needed = (90 − 84 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 114% — out of reach, so the calculator will tell you plainly instead of showing a fantasy number. If it says you need 40% or less on the final, most students treat the target as safe; if it says over 100%, pick a lower target from the table.

How is a weighted grade calculated?

Each category's assignments are averaged, then each average is multiplied by its weight and summed. With homework at 80% (weight 30%) and exams at 90% (weight 70%), the grade is 0.8×30 + 0.9×70 = 87%.

What if my category weights don't add to 100%?

The tracker warns you under the category list. Fix the weights so they total 100% — otherwise the grade is silently wrong, which is worse than no grade at all.

What does "drop lowest" do?

It removes that many of your lowest scores in the category before averaging — the same policy many syllabi use ("lowest two quizzes dropped"). Enter 1 to drop a single bad day.

Why doesn't my ungraded final lower my grade?

Categories with no entered scores are excluded and the remaining weights are renormalized. Your sidebar grade reflects what you've actually completed — the final-exam tab is where you plan around what's left.

What if the calculator says I need over 100% on the final?

Then the target is mathematically impossible. The per-grade table shows what each lower letter grade would take — pick the highest one that's actually reachable.

Can I track more than one class?

Yes — use the course switcher at the top of the tracker. Each course keeps its own categories, assignments, and grade scale, saved in your browser.

Is my grade data sent anywhere?

No. Everything is computed and stored locally in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded, stored on a server, or tracked.

What's the difference between this and the GPA calculator?

This page answers "what's my grade in this class?" — the GPA calculator answers "what's my GPA across all classes?" Use both: this page per class, that page per semester.
