Ideal Weight Range

What do the classic formulas say your ideal weight is? Enter your height and see.

How to read your ideal weight range

  1. Pick your units and enter your height, then choose your sex.
  2. Press Calculate weight range. The Devine, Hamwi, Robinson, and Miller results appear in a table.
  3. Compare the four formulas. They rarely agree exactly — the spread is normal and shows how approximate they are.
  4. Use the highlighted consensus range — the span across all four formulas plus the healthy BMI range — as your ballpark.

Frequently asked questions

Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?

None of them is truly accurate — Devine, Hamwi, Robinson, and Miller are all rough rules of thumb developed decades ago, and they disagree with each other by several kilograms. Treat the consensus range as a ballpark, not a prescription.

What is the Devine formula?

The Devine formula estimates ideal body weight from height: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet for men, and 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet for women. It was originally developed for drug dosing, not fitness.

How is the healthy BMI range calculated?

A healthy BMI runs from 18.5 to 24.9. Multiply each bound by your height in meters squared: at 1.8 m, that is 18.5 × 3.24 ≈ 59.9 kg up to 24.9 × 3.24 ≈ 80.7 kg.

Do these formulas work for children or athletes?

No. They were developed for adults and ignore age, body composition, and muscle mass — a muscular athlete can be perfectly healthy well above every formula's number.

Is this medical advice?

No. These are estimates for education only — not medical advice. Talk to a healthcare professional about a healthy weight for your body.
