How to do long division
- Enter the dividend and the divisor (positive whole numbers) and how many decimal places to show.
- Press Divide. The quotient, remainder, and a check (divisor × quotient + remainder = dividend) appear first.
- Read the tableau top to bottom — it is the classic school layout: quotient on top, each subtraction ruled off.
- Follow the steps list for the play-by-play: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down, one digit at a time.
- Check the decimal expansion. A repeating block gets an overline; a terminating division is called out.
Frequently asked questions
What are the parts of a division?
The dividend is the number being divided, the divisor is what you divide by, the quotient is the whole-number answer, and the remainder is what is left over. For example 1234 ÷ 7 = 176 remainder 2, because 7 × 176 + 2 = 1234.
How does long division work?
Work through the dividend one digit at a time, repeating four moves: divide the current number by the divisor, multiply the divisor by that digit, subtract, then bring down the next digit. This calculator shows every one of those moves in the tableau.
What does it mean when a decimal repeats?
If a remainder you have seen before comes back, the same digits will repeat forever — for example 1 ÷ 3 = 0.333… This calculator detects the cycle and marks the repeating block with an overline.
What is a remainder?
The remainder is the amount left over after dividing as evenly as possible with whole numbers: 100 ÷ 7 = 14 remainder 2, because 7 × 14 = 98 and 100 − 98 = 2.
Why can't I divide by zero?
Division asks how many groups of the divisor fit into the dividend, and no number of zero-sized groups ever adds up to anything else — so division by zero has no meaningful answer and is undefined.
