System of Equations Solver
2×2 and 3×3 systems, solved step by step.
Elimination steps
How to use the system of equations solver
- Choose 2×2 or 3×3. The grid shows one row per equation, one box per coefficient.
- Type your system — for x + 2y = 5, enter 1, 2, then 5 in the last box.
- Press Solve. You'll get the verdict (unique, infinite, or no solution) plus the full elimination steps.
- Read the steps — each row operation is shown with the matrix after it, so you can follow (or copy) the working.
Frequently asked questions
What is Gaussian elimination?
A systematic way to solve linear systems: write them as an augmented matrix, then use row operations to clear entries below each pivot until the matrix is triangular — then read the answers off from the bottom row up (back-substitution).
What does “infinitely many solutions” mean?
The equations describe the same line (in 2D) or overlapping planes (in 3D), so every point on it satisfies all of them. One variable stays free — it can be anything, and the others follow from it.
Why does the solver swap rows sometimes?
That's partial pivoting: before eliminating a column, the row with the largest entry becomes the pivot row. It keeps rounding error small and handles a zero pivot gracefully — for example, 0x + y = 2.
How do I know if there's no solution?
Elimination produces a row like 0 = 5 — a contradiction. Geometrically that's parallel lines (2×2) or planes with no common point (3×3).
Are my equations sent anywhere?
No. The elimination runs entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to a server or stored.
