Frequently asked questions

How is overtime calculated on a time card?

Add up the week's hours. The first 40 hours are paid at the regular rate; every hour past 40 is overtime at 1.5 times the rate. For a 45-hour week at $20/hour: 40 × $20 + 5 × $30 = $950.

How do you calculate hours for an overnight shift?

When the clock-out time is earlier than the clock-in time, add a full 24 hours before subtracting. A 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM shift is (6:00 + 24:00) − 22:00 = 8 hours, then subtract any unpaid break.

Are unpaid breaks subtracted from the time card?

Yes — enter unpaid break minutes per day and they are subtracted from that day's shift. A 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM shift with a 30-minute lunch is 8 hours minus 30 minutes = 7.5 hours.

What happens if I leave a day blank?

A day with both clock-in and clock-out empty counts as a day off (0 hours). If only one of the two is filled in, the tool flags that day as an error so nothing is silently wrong.

Is the 40-hour overtime threshold a law?

In the US, the Fair Labor Standards Act requires overtime at 1.5x for hours over 40 per week for covered non-exempt employees. Some states and employers have stricter rules — this tool uses the standard 40-hour line.
