Word Search Generator

Turn any word list into a printable word search — vocabulary review, spelling practice, or rainy-day fun, in seconds.

Letters only — anything else is stripped out. Your list is saved in your browser as you type.

Make the grid at least as wide as your longest word. 10×10 suits kids; 15×15 fits longer classroom lists.

How to make a custom word search

A word search is one of the easiest classroom activities to make — and one of the best for spelling. Here's the whole ritual:

  1. List your words, one per line. Spelling lists, vocabulary units, holiday themes — anything works.
  2. Pick a grid size. 10×10 suits 8–12 short words for kids; 15×15 handles longer lists. The grid must be at least as wide as your longest word.
  3. Generate. Each word hides in a random direction, and leftover squares fill with random letters. Click again to reshuffle.
  4. Print. The print view shows only the grid and the word list — choose Save as PDF for a clean handout.

Why words cross and share letters

Real word searches let words cross: two words can share a letter where they intersect. This generator does the same, which is why long words usually still fit — and why a word that can't be placed after hundreds of tries is reported clearly instead of hanging.

How does the word search generator place the words?
Each word is dropped into the grid in a random direction — across, down, or diagonal, forward or backward — and any leftover squares are filled with random letters. Longer words are placed first so they fit.
What happens if a word cannot be placed?
Words longer than the grid are skipped and reported as unplaceable. Words that still do not fit after hundreds of tries are reported too, so you know exactly which ones to shorten or move to a bigger grid.
What grid size should I use?
A 10 by 10 grid suits 8 to 12 short words for kids, while a 15 by 15 handles longer classroom lists. As a rule of thumb, the grid should be at least as wide as your longest word.
Can I make a puzzle for younger kids?
Yes. Use short words and a smaller grid, such as 8 by 8 or 10 by 10. Shorter words in a smaller grid are easier to spot, which keeps the puzzle friendly for beginners.
How do I print the puzzle or save it as a PDF?
Click Print puzzle. The print view shows only the letter grid and the word list, so choosing Save as PDF in your print dialog gives you a clean handout worksheet.
Are my words sent anywhere?
No. The whole puzzle is generated in your browser with JavaScript. Your word list never leaves your device.
