APR Calculator

The rate you're quoted isn't the rate you pay. Fees see to that.

How to find a loan's true APR

  1. Enter the loan amount and every upfront fee: origination, points, lender charges.
  2. Add the quoted nominal rate and term.
  3. Press Calculate. The true APR — the rate on the money you actually receive — appears.
  4. Compare offers by APR, not by nominal rate. Same rate, different fees = different loans.

Frequently asked questions

What is APR vs interest rate?

The interest rate prices the borrowed dollars; APR folds in upfront fees too, giving the true yearly cost. Same rate with higher fees means higher APR.

How is APR actually computed?

It's the discount rate that makes the present value of all payments equal the net cash you receive (loan minus fees). This calculator solves it by bisection.

Why does APR assume full term?

Fees amortize over the whole schedule. Sell or refinance early and you paid those fees for fewer years — the real cost was higher than the APR suggested.

Can two loans have the same rate but different APRs?

Yes — that's the whole point. A 6.75% loan with $8,000 in fees has a higher APR than a 6.75% loan with $1,000 in fees.

Does 0 fees mean APR equals the rate?

Exactly — with no upfront costs, the true APR is the nominal rate.
