Protein and carbs carry 4 calories per gram; fat carries 9 — that is why a small fat percentage still covers many calories.

How to split your macros
- Enter your daily calorie target. Use the Codex calorie calculator if you don't have one yet.
- Pick a preset split. Balanced 30/40/30 for everyday eating, high-protein 40/30/30 for training, low-carb 35/15/50, or keto 10/5/85.
- Or drag the sliders for a custom split. The three percentages must total exactly 100% — the badge tells you where you stand.
- Press Split my macros. Grams per macro, calories per macro, and a proportional bar appear above.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my macros?
Multiply your daily calories by each macro's percentage, then divide protein and carbs by 4 (calories per gram) and fat by 9. For example, 2,000 calories on a balanced 30/40/30 split gives 150 g protein, 200 g carbs, and 67 g fat.
What is a good macro split for weight loss?
Many people do well on a high-protein split like 40/30/30, since protein is filling and supports muscle. The calorie total matters more than the split, though — this tool just divides up whatever calorie target you enter.
Why does fat have 9 calories per gram?
Fat is more energy-dense than the other macros: it carries about 9 calories per gram, while protein and carbohydrates each carry about 4. That is why a small number of fat grams covers a large share of calories.
Do my percentages have to add up to 100?
Yes. The presets and sliders describe how 100% of your calories are divided between protein, carbs, and fat. The calculator will not run until your three percentages total exactly 100.
