The Magic Codex

Notes App

A notebook that lives in your browser. Write, search, and organize notes — everything autosaves, nothing leaves your device.

No notes yet

Select a note on the left, or create a new one, to start writing.

How to take notes you'll actually revisit

Notes fail when they're written to be written rather than reread. Three habits fix that: capture fast, condense ruthlessly, and revisit on a schedule.

  1. Capture fast. One note per idea or lecture. Don't polish — a messy note you have beats a perfect note you never wrote.
  2. Title for finding. "Bio ch.5 — mitosis" beats "notes 3". The search box scans titles and bodies, so future-you can find anything in seconds.
  3. Condense within 24 hours. Reopen yesterday's note and shrink it: bold the three things that matter, delete the rest.
  4. Back up monthly. Hit Export and save the JSON file somewhere safe — browser data can vanish with a cache clear.

Why autosave matters

Every keystroke here is saved automatically a moment after you pause — there's no save button to forget. The “Saved ✓” line under the editor is your receipt. That means a dead battery or a closed tab costs you nothing.

Where are my notes saved?
In your own browser, using localStorage. No account, no sign-up, nothing is uploaded. Clearing your browser data deletes your notes — export a JSON backup for safekeeping.
Do notes autosave?
Yes. Every change is saved automatically after a short pause — watch for the “Saved ✓” indicator under the editor. You can close the tab anytime without losing work.
How do I back up or move my notes?
Use Export to download all notes as a JSON file, and Import to load that file back — on this or another device. Imported notes merge with your current ones; duplicates are skipped.
Is there a limit to how many notes I can keep?
No artificial limit. Notes are plain text, so hundreds fit comfortably in browser storage (about 5 MB). If storage ever fills up, the app keeps working for the session.
Can I recover a deleted note?
No — deleting a note is permanent, and the app asks for confirmation first. For anything important, export a JSON backup regularly.
Does search look inside note text or just titles?
Both. The search box matches titles and note bodies, case-insensitively, and filters the list as you type.
