Frequently asked questions
How do you write large numbers in words?
Break the number into groups of three digits and read each group with its scale: for example 1,234,567 is one million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven. The scales are thousand, million, billion, and trillion.
How are decimals read aloud in words?
Read the whole-number part, say “point,” then read each decimal digit one by one: 3.14 is “three point one four.” This converter follows that convention.
Why is it spelled “forty” and not “fourty”?
Forty is one of English's famous spelling quirks: the “u” from “four” is dropped when the “-ty” ending is added. This converter uses the correct “forty” spelling.
Do you say “one hundred and twenty-three”?
In British English the “and” is common (“one hundred and twenty-three”); in American English it is usually dropped (“one hundred twenty-three”). This converter uses the American form without “and.”
What is the largest number this converter handles?
999 trillion — that is 999,999,999,999,999 — plus any decimals you attach. Larger values need scientific notation or quadrillion-scale words, which this converter does not cover.
