Scientific Notation Converter

Convert between decimals and scientific notation, read engineering notation, and add, subtract, multiply, or divide — with the working shown.

Decimal → scientific notation

Scientific notation → decimal

Accepts 3.2e5, 3.2E-4, 3.2×10^5, or 3.2×10⁵.

Scientific-notation arithmetic

How to use the scientific notation converter

  1. Type a decimal to see it in scientific and engineering notation — negative exponents and zero are handled.
  2. Or type scientific notation (3.2e5, 3.2×10^5, 3.2×10⁵ all work) to get the plain decimal back.
  3. For arithmetic, enter two sci-notation values, pick an operation, and read the step-by-step working — the answer is renormalized to proper scientific form.
  4. Check the exponent when multiplying: it is the sum of the two exponents, a classic exam trap.

Frequently asked questions

What is scientific notation?

A way to write numbers as a coefficient times a power of 10, like 3.25 × 10⁴. The coefficient is always between 1 and 10 (or −10 and −1 for negatives).

What is engineering notation?

Like scientific notation, but the exponent is always a multiple of 3 — matching metric prefixes. 32,500 becomes 32.5 × 10³ (kilo), and 0.0045 becomes 4.5 × 10⁻³ (milli).

How do you add numbers in scientific notation?

Line up the exponents first: 3.2 × 10⁵ + 4.5 × 10⁴ = 32 × 10⁴ + 4.5 × 10⁴ = 36.5 × 10⁴, then renormalize to 3.65 × 10⁵.

How do you multiply numbers in scientific notation?

Multiply the coefficients and add the exponents: (2 × 10³)(3 × 10²) = 6 × 10⁵. For division, divide the coefficients and subtract the exponents.

How do you convert scientific notation back to a decimal?

Move the decimal point right for a positive exponent, left for a negative one. 3.2 × 10⁴ = 32,000; 3.2 × 10⁻³ = 0.0032.
